WOUND CARE
Wounds can be caused by venous insufficiency, arterial insufficiency, neuropathy, and trauma. The healing time varies depending on patient's lifestyle and co-existing systemic illnesses.
Diabetes Canada reports that Canadian adults with diabetes are over 20 times more likely to undergo non-traumatic lower limb amputations. The most commonly seen wounds in diabetics are diabetic foot ulcers. Diabetic foot ulcers create a portal of entry for bacteria, fungus and viruses. A multi-disciplinary approach is often used to heal a diabetic foot ulcer which consists of chiropodists, physicians, nurses, and personal support workers.
